The Rotomoulding Method Components

1. Mold prep work.

The most commonly used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this type of plastic production.

Pre-heating of the oven follows, and it may be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is heated up to temperatures between 500-700F. The mold with the powdered polymer is then secured and inserted into the oven.

2. The heating up and fusion process.
Once inside the oven, the mould is rotated on two axis so the powdered polymer melts from the heat and coats the inside if the mould. The rotation is done slowly and gradually, about 20 spins per minute. One thing that is vital at this moment is the amount of time the mold will spend within the oven. If it stays to long, the product will lose value and strength, making a faulty item. If it is removed from the oven prematurely, the polymer will not have flowed properly, which generates bubbles in the finalized product line.

3. Mold cooling down.
When the product has completely spent the correct amount of time in the oven, it is then removed for cooling. This may be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which a cool mist. When the product cools, it reduces somewhat for ease of extraction from the mould. This is one more step that depends a lot on the correct timing, since quick cooling decreases the material too quick, causing warping of the material.

4. The un-loading or de-moulding step.
Once the component within te mould has cooled correctly, the molder managing the operation can then remove the finalized product from the mould. The technique is repeated from the start, making a series of exact products.
