The Rotomoulding Process Components

This molding process has been used since earlier times for creatingvseverl product lines. Egyptians for example, utilized roto-molding systems in the producing of ceramics. The Swiss were also working with this rotation method to make hollow chocolate eggs. Some plastic products in the USA were developed using this approach some time between 1940 and 1950. The procedure has however taken long to catch on because it was considered as being a somewhat slow-moving process

1. Mold preparation.
A predetermined quantity of polymer in particle form is packed into a hollow mould. The mold is usually crafted from cast aluminium or sheet steel material. The color wanted for the final goods is pre compounded into the polymer. The most often used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this format of plastic assembly.

Pre-heating of the oven starts, and it can be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is warmed to temperatures between 500-700F. The mould with the powdered polymer is then secured and installed inside the oven.

2. The heating and fusion process.
Once inside the oven, the mould is rotated on two axis so the powdered polymer melts from the heat and layers the inside if the mold. The spinning is done slowly and gradually, about 20 rotations per min. The main thing that is essential at this moment is the amount of time the mold will spend within the oven. If it overstays, the material will lose value and durability, generating a weak item. If it is taken out from the oven prematurely, the polymer will not have flowed properly, which produces bubbles in the finished item.

3. Mould cooling.
When the material has completely spent the right amount of time in the oven, it is then taken out for cooling. This can be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which creates a cool mist. When the material cools, it reduces slightly for ease of removal from the mold. This is an additional step that depends upon a lot on the right timing, since quick cooling shrinks the material too rapidly, causing warping of the product.

4. The offloading or de-molding phase.
As soon as the product within te mold has cooled adequately, the molder handling the process can then extract the completed product from the mold. The technique is repeated from the beginning, giving a series of exact products.
