The Rotomolding Method in Detail

This molding technique has been used since early times for creatingvseverl product lines. Egyptians for instance, worked with rotational molding methods in the producing of ceramics. 1. Mould prep work.
A predetermined volume of polymer in particle form is loaded into a hollow mold. The mould is usually crafted from cast aluminium or sheet steel material. The coloring intended for the final product is pre compounded into the polymer. The most commonly used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this format of plastic engineering.

Preheating of the oven starts, and it can be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is warmed to temperatures between 500-700F. The mold with the powdered polymer is then sealed and positioned into the oven.

2. The heat and fusion process.
Once inside the oven, the mold is turned on two axis so the powdered polymer melts from the heat and layers the inside if the mold. The rotation is done gradually, about 20 spins per min. One thing that is important at this moment is the amount of time the mould will spend within the oven. If it stays to long, the component will lose value and durability, producing a poor item. If it is extracted from the oven too early, the polymer will not have melted properly, which creates bubbles in the finalized item.

3. Mold cooling.
When the product has completely spent the correct amount of time in the oven, it is then removed for cooling. This can be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which a cool mist. When the material cools, it shrinks somewhat for ease of extraction from the mould. This is one more step that depends a lot on the ideal timing, since rapid cooling reduces the material too quickly, causing warping of the item.

4. The un-loading or de-moulding step.
As soon as the product inside te mould has cooled effectively, the person taking care of the process can then remove the finalized item from the mold. The function is repeated from the beginning, giving a series of similar product lines.
