The Rotomolding Method in Detail

This moulding procedure has been used since ancient times for creatingvseverl items. Egyptians for example, applied rotomoulding techniques in the making of ceramics. The Swiss were also applying this rotation format to make hollow chocolate eggs. Some plastic items in the USA were created utilizing this procedure some time between 1940 and 1950. The procedure has however taken long to catch on because it was looked at to be a moderately slow-moving process

1. Mold preparation.
A predetermined measure of polymer in powder form is filled into a hollow mold. The mould is usually built from cast aluminium or sheet steel material. The color wanted for the end item is pre compounded into the polymer. The most generally used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this format of plastic production.

Preheating of the oven follows, and it can be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is warmed to temperatures between 500-700F. The mold with the powdered polymer is then locked and inserted into the oven.

2. The heating up and fusion phase.
Once inside the oven, the mould is rotated on two axis so the powdered polymer melts from the heat and coats the inside if the mould. The rotation is done slowly, about 20 revolutions per min. The main thing that is important at this point is the period of time the mold will spend inside the oven. If it overstays, the component will lose value and strength, producing a weak item. If it is extracted from the oven too early, the polymer will not have melted correctly, which generates bubbles in the completed item.

3. Mold cooling.
When the product has completely spent the right amount of time in the oven, it is then taken out for cooling. This can be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which generates a cool mist. When the component cools, it reduces somewhat for ease of removal from the mould. This is another procedure that depends upon a lot on the ideal timing, since rapid cooling shrinks the material too quick, causing warping of the product.

4. The removing or de-moulding phase.
As soon as the product within te mould has cooled successfully, the person managing the process can then take out the finished product from the mould. The procedure is repeated from the start, supplying a number of identical product lines.
