The Rotomolding Process in Detail

1. Mould fitting.
A fixed measure of polymer in powder form is packed into a hollow mold. The mould is usually made from cast aluminium or sheet steel substance. The coloring intended for the finished product is pre compounded into the polymer. The most often used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this type of plastic assembly.

Preheating of the oven starts, and it may be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is heated to temperatures between 500-700F. The mold with the powdered polymer is then secured and placed inside the oven.

2. The heating and fusion phase.
Once placed into the oven, the mold is spun on two axis so the powdered polymer liquefies from the heat and layers the inside if the mould. The rotation is done slowly, about 20 spins per minute. The main thing that is important at this moment is the amount of time the mould will spend inside the oven. If it overstays, the component will lose stability and strength, creating a faulty item. If it is extracted from the oven prematurely, the polymer will not have melted correctly, which creates bubbles in the completed item.

3. Mould cooling down.
When the component has sufficiently spent the correct amount of time in the oven, it is then extracted for cooling. This may be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which creates a cool mist. When the material cools, it reduces slightly for ease of extraction from the mould. This is an additional step that relies a lot on the ideal timing, since quick cooling shrinks the material too fast, causing bending of the product.

4. The discharging or de-moulding phase.
Once the material within te mold has cooled properly, the molder managing the procedure can then remove the finished product from the mold. The procedure is repeated from the start, supplying a series of identical products.
