The Roto-Molding Method in Detail

1. Mold readying.
A fixed amount of polymer in particle form is filled into a hollow mould. The mold is usually composeded of cast aluminium or sheet steel substance. The coloration desired for the final item is pre compounded into the polymer. The most commonly used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this format of plastic assembly.

Preheating of the oven starts, and it may be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is heated to temperatures between 500-700F. The mould with the powdered polymer is then secured and placed inside the oven.

2. The heat and fusion step.
Once within the oven, the mould is turned on two axis so the powdered polymer liquefies from the heat and overlays the inside if the mould. The rotation is done gradually, about 20 spins per minute. One thing that is critical at this moment is the amount of time the mold will spend within the oven. If it overstays, the material will lose stability and strength, creating a poor item. If it is removed from the oven too early, the polymer will not have flowed properly, which creates bubbles in the completed product.

3. Mould cooling.
When the product has sufficiently spent the right amount of time in the oven, it is then removed for cooling. This can be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which generates a cool mist. When the material cools, it shrinks a little for ease of extraction from the mold. This is an additional procedure that relies a lot on the correct timing, since quick cooling reduces the material too quick, causing warping of the item.

4. The removing or de-moulding step.
As soon as the product inside te mould has cooled correctly, the molder handling the operation can then remove the completed product from the mould. The technique is repeated from the beginning, providing a number of identical products.
