The Rotomoulding Process Components

1. Mold prep work.
A predetermined quantity of polymer in grain form is loaded into a hollow mold. The mold is usually made of cast aluminium or sheet steel component. The colour preferred for the final goods is pre compounded into the polymer. The most generally used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this type of plastic engineering.

Preheating of the oven starts, and it can be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is warmed to temperatures between 500-700F. The mould with the powdered polymer is then locked and installed into the oven.

2. The heat and fusion phase.
Once within the oven, the mould is turned on two axis so the powdered polymer liquefies from the heat and layers the inside if the mold. The rotation is done slowly and gradually, about 20 rotations per min. The main thing that is essential at this moment is the period of time the mold will spend within the oven. If it stays to long, the product will lose value and durability, making a faulty item. If it is taken out from the oven too early, the polymer will not have liquefied properly, which creates bubbles in the completed item.

3. Mold cooling.
When the component has completely spent the right amount of time in the oven, it is then extracted for cooling. This may be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which a cool mist. When the material cools, it shrinks slightly for ease of removal from the mold. This is one more procedure that relies a lot on the ideal timing, since quick cooling reduces the material too fast, causing warping of the material.

4. The discharging or de-moulding phase.
When the component inside te mold has cooled correctly, the molder managing the process can then remove the finalized item from the mold. The function is repeated from the start, supplying a number of identical products.
