The Rotomolding Process Components

1. Mold preparation.
A fixed quantity of polymer in particle form is packed into a hollow mould. The mold is usually constructed from cast aluminium or sheet steel substance. The color wanted for the end goods is pre compounded into the polymer. The most often used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this format of plastic production.

Preheating of the oven starts, and it can be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is warmed to temperatures between 500-700F. The mould with the powdered polymer is then sealed and positioned inside the oven.

2. The heat and fusion step.
Once within the oven, the mold is revolved on two axis so the powdered polymer melts from the heat and overlays the inside if the mold. The turning is done gradually, about 20 rotations per minute. The main thing that is vital at this point is the period of time the mould will spend inside the oven. If it overstays, the product will lose stability and durability, producing a weak product. If it is extracted from the oven prematurely, the polymer will not have flowed correctly, which generates bubbles in the completed product.

3. Mold cooling down.
When the product has sufficiently spent the correct amount of time in the oven, it is then removed for cooling. This may be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which generates a cool mist. When the product cools, it shrinks a little for ease of extraction from the mould. This is an additional step that depends upon a lot on the correct timing, since rapid cooling reduces the material too rapidly, causing bending of the item.

4. The unloading or de-molding step.
Once the material within te mold has cooled effectively, the molder managing the operation can then take out the finalized product from the mould. The procedure is repeated from the start, providing a number of identical product lines.
