The Rotomoulding Procedure in Detail

This molding procedure has been used since earlier times for creatingvseverl product lines. Egyptians for example, utilized rotational molding systems in the producing of ceramics. The technique has however taken very long to take affect because it was considered to be a relatively slow-moving process

1. Mold preparation.
A predetermined quantity of polymer in powder form is filled into a hollow mold. The mould is usually composeded of cast aluminium or sheet steel component. The colour needed for the end product is pre compounded into the polymer. The most commonly used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this type of plastic assembly.

Pre-heating of the oven starts, and it may be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is heated to temperatures between 500-700F. The mold with the powdered polymer is then secured and inserted within the oven.

2. The heating up and fusion step.
Once placed into the oven, the mould is rotated on two axis so the powdered polymer liquefies from the heat and overlays the inside if the mould. The spinning is done slowly and gradually, about 20 rotations per min. The main thing that is vital at this moment is the amount of time the mould will spend inside the oven. If it overstays, the component will lose stability and durability, creating a weak item. If it is removed from the oven prematurely, the polymer will not have melted correctly, which develops bubbles in the completed product line.

3. Mould cooling down.
When the material has completely spent the right amount of time in the oven, it is then removed for cooling. This may be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which a cool mist. When the component cools, it shrinks a little for ease of removal from the mould. This is an additional step that depends a lot on the right timing, since rapid cooling shrinks the material too rapidly, causing warping of the item.

4. The discharging or de-moulding phase.
Once the material within te mold has cooled successfully, the person managing the process can then extract the completed item from the mould. The process is repeated from the beginning, supplying a number of exact products.
