The Rotomolding Process Components

This moulding procedure has been used since early times for creatingvseverl products. Egyptians for instance, worked with roto-molding systems in the making of ceramics. The process has however taken long to take affect because it was thought of to be a moderately slow process

1. Mold readying.
A predetermined volume of polymer in powder form is filled into a hollow mould. The mold is usually made of cast aluminium or sheet steel material. The color tone chosen for the end goods is pre compounded into the polymer. The most generally used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this design of plastic production.

Pre-heating of the oven follows, and it can be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is heated up to temperatures between 500-700F. The mould with the powdered polymer is then secured and inserted into the oven.

2. The heat and fusion phase.
Once within the oven, the mold is spun on two axis so the powdered polymer liquefies from the heat and layers the inside if the mold. The turning is done gradually, about 20 rotations per sixty seconds. One thing that is important at this moment is the amount of time the mould will spend inside the oven. If it overstays, the material will lose stability and durability, generating a weak item. If it is extracted from the oven prematurely, the polymer will not have melted correctly, which produces bubbles in the finalized item.

3. Mould cooling down.
When the component has sufficiently spent the right amount of time in the oven, it is then taken out for cooling. This may be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which creates a cool mist. When the component cools, it shrinks a little for ease of extraction from the mold. This is an additional step that depends upon a lot on the right timing, since rapid cooling shrinks the material too quickly, causing warping of the product.

4. The removing or de-molding phase.
When the component within te mould has cooled correctly, the person taking care of the process can then extract the completed item from the mold. The process is repeated from the beginning, supplying a series of similar product lines.
