The Rotomoulding Procedure in Detail

1. Mold readying.
A predetermined amount of polymer in particle form is loaded into a hollow mold. The mold is usually made from cast aluminium or sheet steel component. The color tone desired for the end goods is pre compounded into the polymer. The most often used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this style of plastic production.

Pre-heating of the oven follows, and it can be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is heated to temperatures between 500-700F. The mould with the powdered polymer is then secured and positioned inside the oven.

2. The heat and fusion phase.
Once inside the oven, the mold is spun on two axis so the powdered polymer melts from the heat and layers the inside if the mold. The turning is done slowly and gradually, about 20 rotations per minute. One thing that is crucial at this moment is the amount of time the mould will spend inside the oven. If it overstays, the component will lose value and durability, making a faulty item. If it is extracted from the oven too early, the polymer will not have flowed correctly, which creates bubbles in the finalized product.

3. Mould cooling.
When the product has completely spent the right amount of time in the oven, it is then removed for cooling. This can be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which a cool mist. When the component cools, it shrinks slightly for ease of extraction from the mold. This is another step that relies a lot on the ideal timing, since quick cooling decreases the material too fast, causing warping of the item.

4. The discharging or de-moulding step.
When the material inside te mould has cooled properly, the person taking care of the operation can then extract the completed item from the mold. The procedure is repeated from the beginning, giving a number of identical products.
