The Rotomolding Procedure in Detail

The procedure has however taken long to catch on because it was thought of to be a moderately slow process

1. Mould prep work.
A predetermined amount of polymer in particle form is loaded into a hollow mold. The mold is usually composeded of cast aluminium or sheet steel material. The coloring wanted for the end item is pre compounded into the polymer. The most generally used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this style of plastic manufacturing.

Pre-heating of the oven starts, and it may be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is heated to temperatures between 500-700F. The mould with the powdered polymer is then sealed and positioned into the oven.

2. The heating and fusion step.
Once within the oven, the mold is spun on two axis so the powdered polymer melts from the heat and overlays the inside if the mold. The rotation is done slowly, about 20 spins per min. Something that is crucial at this moment is the period of time the mould will spend within the oven. If it stays to long, the product will lose stability and strength, creating a weak product. If it is extracted from the oven too early, the polymer will not have flowed properly, which produces bubbles in the completed item.

3. Mold cooling down.
When the component has completely spent the right amount of time in the oven, it is then extracted for cooling. This may be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which creates a cool mist. When the product cools, it reduces somewhat for ease of removal from the mould. This is yet another measure that depends upon a lot on the ideal timing, since rapid cooling decreases the material too fast, causing warping of the material.

4. The un-loading or de-moulding step.
As soon as the component inside te mold has cooled adequately, the person managing the process can then extract the finalized product from the mold. The technique is repeated from the beginning, giving a number of exact items.
