The Rotomolding Process in Detail

1. Mold preparation.
A predetermined amount of polymer in grain form is filled into a hollow mold. The mold is usually comprised of cast aluminium or sheet steel component. The most generally used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this format of plastic assembly.

Preheating of the oven follows, and it can be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is warmed to temperatures between 500-700F. The mold with the powdered polymer is then locked and installed into the oven.

2. The heat and fusion step.
Once within the oven, the mould is spun on two axis so the powdered polymer melts from the heat and layers the inside if the mould. The turning is done slowly, about 20 revolutions per minute. Something that is important at this moment is the period of time the mold will spend within the oven. If it stays to long, the material will lose value and strength, generating a weak item. If it is taken out from the oven too early, the polymer will not have melted properly, which generates bubbles in the completed product.

3. Mould cooling.
When the material has sufficiently spent the right amount of time in the oven, it is then taken out for cooling. This may be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which a cool mist. When the component cools, it shrinks slightly for ease of removal from the mold. This is one more measure that depends upon a lot on the right timing, since quick cooling decreases the material too quick, causing warping of the item.

4. The removing or de-molding step.
As soon as the component inside te mold has cooled adequately, the molder managing the procedure can then take out the finalized item from the mold. The procedure is repeated from the beginning, supplying a series of exact products.
