The Rotomolding Method Components

1. Mold preparation.
A predetermined volume of polymer in powder form is packed into a hollow mold. The mold is usually comprised of cast aluminium or sheet steel substance. The most often used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this type of plastic manufacturing.

Preheating of the oven starts, and it may be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is heated to temperatures between 500-700F. The mold with the powdered polymer is then secured and placed inside the oven.

2. The heat and fusion process.
Once within the oven, the mold is spun on two axis so the powdered polymer melts from the heat and coats the inside if the mold. The rotation is done slowly and gradually, about 20 revolutions per minute. The main thing that is vital at this moment is the period of time the mold will spend inside the oven. If it stays to long, the product will lose value and durability, producing a poor product. If it is removed from the oven too early, the polymer will not have liquefied correctly, which develops bubbles in the finished product.

3. Mold cooling.
When the component has completely spent the right amount of time in the oven, it is then removed for cooling. This may be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which creates a cool mist. When the material cools, it shrinks a little for ease of removal from the mould. This is yet another measure that depends a lot on the correct timing, since quick cooling decreases the material too quick, causing bending of the product.

4. The removing or de-molding step.
As soon as the material inside te mould has cooled adequately, the person handling the process can then take out the finalized item from the mold. The procedure is repeated from the beginning, providing a number of similar product lines.
