The Rotomolding Process Components

This molding method has been used since ancient times for creatingvseverl items. Egyptians for instance, used rotomoulding methods in the manufacturing of ceramics. 1. Mold preparation.
A fixed quantity of polymer in powder form is packed into a hollow mould. The mold is usually made of cast aluminium or sheet steel material. The color desired for the final product is pre compounded into the polymer. The most generally used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this style of plastic production.

Pre-heating of the oven follows, and it may be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is heated up to temperatures between 500-700F. The mold with the powdered polymer is then sealed and positioned into the oven.

2. The heating and fusion phase.
Once placed into the oven, the mold is revolved on two axis so the powdered polymer liquefies from the heat and coats the inside if the mold. The rotation is done slowly, about 20 revolutions per sixty seconds. Something that is vital at this point is the amount of time the mold will spend within the oven. If it overstays, the product will lose stability and strength, creating a poor product. If it is extracted from the oven prematurely, the polymer will not have liquefied properly, which creates bubbles in the finalized product line.

3. Mold cooling.
When the component has sufficiently spent the right amount of time in the oven, it is then taken out for cooling. This can be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which creates a cool mist. When the product cools, it reduces a little for ease of removal from the mould. This is yet another procedure that relies a lot on the correct timing, since rapid cooling reduces the material too fast, causing warping of the item.

4. The un-loading or de-moulding step.
When the product within te mould has cooled properly, the molder managing the operation can then extract the finished product from the mold. The procedure is repeated from the start, giving a series of exact items.
