The Rotomoulding Method Components

1. Mould readying.
A fixed quantity of polymer in grain form is packed into a hollow mold. The mould is usually constructed from cast aluminium or sheet steel component. The most commonly used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this style of plastic engineering.

Preheating of the oven follows, and it may be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is warmed to temperatures between 500-700F. The mold with the powdered polymer is then locked and placed within the oven.

2. The heat and fusion phase.
Once inside the oven, the mould is rotated on two axis so the powdered polymer liquefies from the heat and coats the inside if the mould. The rotation is done slowly, about 20 rotations per sixty seconds. Something that is vital at this moment is the period of time the mold will spend within the oven. If it overstays, the material will lose stability and strength, producing a weak item. If it is extracted from the oven prematurely, the polymer will not have flowed correctly, which produces bubbles in the completed product line.

3. Mould cooling.
When the product has sufficiently spent the correct amount of time in the oven, it is then extracted for cooling. This may be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which creates a cool mist. When the material cools, it shrinks slightly for ease of extraction from the mold. This is one more measure that relies a lot on the ideal timing, since rapid cooling shrinks the material too quickly, causing warping of the item.

4. The un-loading or de-molding phase.
As soon as the component inside te mold has cooled properly, the person handling the operation can then extract the finalized item from the mould. The function is repeated from the start, making a series of similar products.
