The Rotomolding Method in Detail

1. Mold preparation.
A fixed volume of polymer in particle form is filled into a hollow mould. The mold is usually built from cast aluminium or sheet steel component. Preheating of the oven starts, and it may be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is heated up to temperatures between 500-700F. The mould with the powdered polymer is then locked and installed within the oven.

2. The heating up and fusion process.
Once inside the oven, the mold is revolved on two axis so the powdered polymer liquefies from the heat and overlays the inside if the mold. The spinning is done slowly and gradually, about 20 spins per min. Something that is important at this point is the period of time the mold will spend within the oven. If it stays to long, the material will lose value and strength, producing a poor item. If it is extracted from the oven too early, the polymer will not have flowed properly, which produces bubbles in the finalized product.

3. Mold cooling.
When the component has completely spent the enough of time in the oven, it is then removed for cooling. This can be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which a cool mist. When the component cools, it shrinks somewhat for ease of extraction from the mold. This is another procedure that depends upon a lot on the correct timing, since quick cooling shrinks the material too quickly, causing bending of the item.

4. The un-loading or de-moulding phase.
Once the product inside te mould has cooled adequately, the molder managing the operation can then take out the finished product from the mold. The process is repeated from the beginning, making a series of similar product lines.
