The Rotomoulding Method in Detail

This moulding process has been used since early times for creatingvseverl products. Egyptians for instance, worked with rotocasting procedures in the of ceramics. The Swiss were also using this rotation approach to create hollow chocolate eggs. Some plastic products in the USA were created using this procedure some time between 1940 and 1950. The system has however taken very long to catch on because it was thought of as being a rather slow process

1. Mold fitting.
A predetermined amount of polymer in particle form is packed into a hollow mold. The mould is usually comprised of cast aluminium or sheet steel substance. The coloration desired for the end goods is pre compounded into the polymer. The most generally used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this style of plastic production.

Preheating of the oven starts, and it may be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is warmed to temperatures between 500-700F. The mold with the powdered polymer is then sealed and installed into the oven.

2. The heating up and fusion process.
Once placed into the oven, the mold is turned on two axis so the powdered polymer liquefies from the heat and coats the inside if the mold. The rotation is done slowly, about 20 rotations per minute. One thing that is important at this moment is the period of time the mould will spend within the oven. If it stays to long, the material will lose stability and strength, generating a poor product. If it is extracted from the oven prematurely, the polymer will not have liquefied correctly, which creates bubbles in the finalized product.

3. Mold cooling down.
When the component has completely spent the enough of time in the oven, it is then removed for cooling. This may be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which a cool mist. When the product cools, it shrinks somewhat for ease of extraction from the mold. This is an additional step that depends upon a lot on the right timing, since rapid cooling reduces the material too quickly, causing bending of the product.

4. The un-loading or de-moulding phase.
As soon as the component inside te mould has cooled adequately, the molder managing the procedure can then remove the completed item from the mold. The technique is repeated from the start, making a series of similar product lines.
