The Roto-Molding Procedure in Detail

This molding process has been used since earlier times for creatingvseverl product lines. Egyptians for example, worked with rotocasting solutions in the manufacturing of ceramics. 1. Mould readying.
A fixed amount of polymer in particle form is filled into a hollow mold. The mould is usually composeded of cast aluminium or sheet steel component. The colour desired for the finished goods is pre compounded into the polymer. The most often used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this format of plastic production.

Preheating of the oven follows, and it can be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is heated to temperatures between 500-700F. The mould with the powdered polymer is then sealed and placed inside the oven.

2. The heat and fusion phase.
Once inside the oven, the mold is rotated on two axis so the powdered polymer melts from the heat and coats the inside if the mould. The rotation is done gradually, about 20 rotations per min. The main thing that is critical at this point is the amount of time the mould will spend within the oven. If it overstays, the material will lose value and strength, producing a weak item. If it is taken out from the oven too early, the polymer will not have flowed correctly, which creates bubbles in the finished product line.

3. Mould cooling down.
When the material has sufficiently spent the right amount of time in the oven, it is then taken out for cooling. This can be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which generates a cool mist. When the component cools, it shrinks slightly for ease of removal from the mold. This is one more step that depends a lot on the right timing, since quick cooling decreases the material too quick, causing bending of the product.

4. The offloading or de-molding phase.
Once the component within te mold has cooled correctly, the person taking care of the process can then take out the finalized item from the mold. The procedure is repeated from the beginning, giving a series of exact products.
