The Rotomolding Method in Detail

1. Mould readying.

Preheating of the oven starts, and it can be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is heated to temperatures between 500-700F. The mould with the powdered polymer is then locked and placed within the oven.

2. The heating and fusion step.
Once placed into the oven, the mould is revolved on two axis so the powdered polymer melts from the heat and layers the inside if the mould. The turning is done slowly and gradually, about 20 revolutions per min. The main thing that is essential at this moment is the amount of time the mould will spend within the oven. If it overstays, the component will lose stability and strength, producing a faulty product. If it is extracted from the oven prematurely, the polymer will not have flowed correctly, which creates bubbles in the completed item.

3. Mould cooling down.
When the material has completely spent the enough of time in the oven, it is then removed for cooling. This may be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which creates a cool mist. When the component cools, it shrinks a little for ease of removal from the mould. This is one more step that depends a lot on the correct timing, since quick cooling shrinks the material too quick, causing warping of the product.

4. The un-loading or de-moulding step.
As soon as the product inside te mold has cooled properly, the person managing the process can then remove the finished item from the mold. The process is repeated from the start, giving a series of similar products.
