The Rotomolding Method Components

1. Mold readying.

Pre-heating of the oven starts, and it may be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is heated to temperatures between 500-700F. The mold with the powdered polymer is then secured and installed within the oven.

2. The heating and fusion phase.
Once placed into the oven, the mold is turned on two axis so the powdered polymer liquefies from the heat and coats the inside if the mold. The turning is done gradually, about 20 spins per min. Something that is crucial at this point is the period of time the mold will spend within the oven. If it stays to long, the component will lose value and durability, creating a faulty item. If it is extracted from the oven prematurely, the polymer will not have flowed properly, which creates bubbles in the finished item.

3. Mold cooling.
When the material has sufficiently spent the right amount of time in the oven, it is then extracted for cooling. This may be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which a cool mist. When the product cools, it shrinks slightly for ease of extraction from the mold. This is another procedure that depends a lot on the right timing, since quick cooling decreases the material too quick, causing bending of the material.

4. The un-loading or de-moulding step.
When the component within te mold has cooled successfully, the person handling the process can then extract the finished item from the mold. The technique is repeated from the start, making a series of exact products.
