The Rotomoulding Procedure in Detail

1. Mould fitting.
A predetermined quantity of polymer in grain form is filled into a hollow mould. The mould is usually made from cast aluminium or sheet steel component. The most typically used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this type of plastic engineering.

Pre-heating of the oven starts, and it can be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is heated up to temperatures between 500-700F. The mould with the powdered polymer is then sealed and placed inside the oven.

2. The heating up and fusion phase.
Once placed into the oven, the mould is turned on two axis so the powdered polymer liquefies from the heat and overlays the inside if the mould. The spinning is done gradually, about 20 revolutions per minute. One thing that is important at this point is the period of time the mold will spend inside the oven. If it stays to long, the component will lose stability and durability, generating a faulty product. If it is taken out from the oven prematurely, the polymer will not have melted correctly, which produces bubbles in the finished product line.

3. Mould cooling down.
When the material has completely spent the enough of time in the oven, it is then removed for cooling. This can be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which a cool mist. When the product cools, it reduces somewhat for ease of removal from the mold. This is yet another step that relies a lot on the correct timing, since quick cooling decreases the material too quick, causing warping of the product.

4. The removing or de-moulding phase.
When the product within te mold has cooled successfully, the molder managing the process can then extract the completed item from the mould. The function is repeated from the start, making a series of similar products.
