The Roto-Molding Process Components

This molding procedure has been used since early times for creatingvseverl product lines. Egyptians as an example, worked with rotocasting techniques in the making of ceramics. 1. Mould readying.
A predetermined amount of polymer in grain form is loaded into a hollow mould. The mold is usually made from cast aluminium or sheet steel material. The coloration preferred for the final product is pre compounded into the polymer. The most generally used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this design of plastic manufacturing.

Pre-heating of the oven follows, and it may be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is heated to temperatures between 500-700F. The mould with the powdered polymer is then sealed and positioned within the oven.

2. The heat and fusion step.
Once placed into the oven, the mold is rotated on two axis so the powdered polymer liquefies from the heat and layers the inside if the mould. The turning is done slowly and gradually, about 20 rotations per min. Something that is essential at this point is the period of time the mould will spend within the oven. If it stays to long, the material will lose value and durability, making a poor product. If it is extracted from the oven prematurely, the polymer will not have melted properly, which produces bubbles in the finished product.

3. Mould cooling.
When the product has completely spent the enough of time in the oven, it is then removed for cooling. This may be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which generates a cool mist. When the material cools, it shrinks slightly for ease of removal from the mould. This is an additional measure that relies a lot on the correct timing, since quick cooling decreases the material too fast, causing bending of the material.

4. The un-loading or de-moulding step.
When the product inside te mould has cooled successfully, the molder managing the procedure can then remove the completed product from the mould. The technique is repeated from the beginning, providing a series of similar items.
