The Rotomolding Process Components

1. Mould readying.
A predetermined quantity of polymer in grain form is packed into a hollow mould. The mold is usually made of cast aluminium or sheet steel component. The most commonly used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this design of plastic assembly.

Pre-heating of the oven follows, and it may be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is heated up to temperatures between 500-700F. The mold with the powdered polymer is then sealed and positioned within the oven.

2. The heating up and fusion process.
Once placed into the oven, the mold is turned on two axis so the powdered polymer melts from the heat and coats the inside if the mold. The turning is done slowly, about 20 revolutions per minute. One thing that is important at this point is the period of time the mold will spend within the oven. If it overstays, the product will lose stability and durability, producing a poor product. If it is removed from the oven prematurely, the polymer will not have liquefied correctly, which produces bubbles in the completed product line.

3. Mold cooling.
When the component has sufficiently spent the enough of time in the oven, it is then removed for cooling. This may be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which generates a cool mist. When the product cools, it shrinks slightly for ease of extraction from the mould. This is another procedure that depends a lot on the correct timing, since quick cooling decreases the material too rapidly, causing bending of the product.

4. The offloading or de-moulding phase.
When the material inside te mould has cooled adequately, the molder taking care of the process can then extract the finalized item from the mold. The function is repeated from the start, making a number of similar items.
