The Roto-Molding Method in Detail

This molding process has been used since ancient times for creatingvseverl products. Egyptians for example, applied rotocasting methods in the making of ceramics. 1. Mould preparation.
A fixed measure of polymer in grain form is filled into a hollow mold. The mould is usually comprised of cast aluminium or sheet steel material. The color tone wanted for the finished item is pre compounded into the polymer. The most often used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this type of plastic manufacturing.

Preheating of the oven follows, and it can be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is heated up to temperatures between 500-700F. The mold with the powdered polymer is then locked and put within the oven.

2. The heating up and fusion step.
Once within the oven, the mold is spun on two axis so the powdered polymer melts from the heat and coats the inside if the mold. The turning is done slowly and gradually, about 20 spins per min. Something that is critical at this point is the period of time the mold will spend within the oven. If it overstays, the material will lose stability and strength, generating a faulty product. If it is taken out from the oven too early, the polymer will not have melted properly, which develops bubbles in the completed product.

3. Mold cooling down.
When the material has sufficiently spent the right amount of time in the oven, it is then extracted for cooling. This may be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which a cool mist. When the component cools, it shrinks a little for ease of removal from the mold. This is another procedure that depends upon a lot on the right timing, since quick cooling decreases the material too rapidly, causing warping of the material.

4. The un-loading or de-molding step.
When the component inside te mould has cooled correctly, the person managing the operation can then extract the completed product from the mold. The technique is repeated from the start, making a number of similar products.
