The Rotomolding Method in Detail

1. Mold fitting.
A fixed quantity of polymer in particle form is packed into a hollow mold. The mold is usually made from cast aluminium or sheet steel component. The coloration preferred for the final product is pre compounded into the polymer. The most generally used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this design of plastic assembly.

Pre-heating of the oven follows, and it may be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is heated up to temperatures between 500-700F. The mould with the powdered polymer is then secured and installed within the oven.

2. The heat and fusion process.
Once placed into the oven, the mold is revolved on two axis so the powdered polymer melts from the heat and overlays the inside if the mould. The spinning is done gradually, about 20 revolutions per min. One thing that is important at this point is the period of time the mould will spend within the oven. If it overstays, the material will lose value and durability, generating a poor product. If it is removed from the oven prematurely, the polymer will not have melted correctly, which produces bubbles in the completed item.

3. Mould cooling.
When the product has sufficiently spent the correct amount of time in the oven, it is then extracted for cooling. This can be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which creates a cool mist. When the component cools, it shrinks somewhat for ease of removal from the mould. This is an additional measure that relies a lot on the correct timing, since quick cooling reduces the material too fast, causing bending of the item.

4. The discharging or de-molding phase.
When the product within te mold has cooled adequately, the person taking care of the procedure can then take out the finished item from the mould. The process is repeated from the start, supplying a number of identical product lines.
