The Rotomolding Method in Detail

1. Mould preparation.
A fixed volume of polymer in particle form is packed into a hollow mould. The mold is usually constructed from cast aluminium or sheet steel substance. The most often used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this type of plastic manufacturing.

Preheating of the oven follows, and it can be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is warmed to temperatures between 500-700F. The mould with the powdered polymer is then secured and put into the oven.

2. The heating and fusion process.
Once within the oven, the mold is spun on two axis so the powdered polymer liquefies from the heat and coats the inside if the mold. The rotation is done slowly, about 20 rotations per min. Something that is vital at this moment is the amount of time the mould will spend within the oven. If it overstays, the material will lose value and strength, making a poor item. If it is taken out from the oven too early, the polymer will not have melted properly, which develops bubbles in the completed product.

3. Mould cooling down.
When the component has sufficiently spent the right amount of time in the oven, it is then removed for cooling. This can be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which a cool mist. When the component cools, it shrinks a little for ease of extraction from the mold. This is one more step that relies a lot on the right timing, since rapid cooling shrinks the material too rapidly, causing bending of the product.

4. The un-loading or de-molding step.
Once the material within te mold has cooled successfully, the person taking care of the procedure can then extract the completed item from the mould. The procedure is repeated from the beginning, providing a number of exact product lines.
