The Rotomolding Process in Detail

1. Mould prep work.
A predetermined amount of polymer in grain form is loaded into a hollow mould. The mold is usually composeded of cast aluminium or sheet steel substance. The most commonly used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this design of plastic manufacturing.

Pre-heating of the oven starts, and it may be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is warmed to temperatures between 500-700F. The mould with the powdered polymer is then sealed and placed within the oven.

2. The heat and fusion procedure.
Once within the oven, the mould is turned on two axis so the powdered polymer liquefies from the heat and coats the inside if the mold. The rotation is done gradually, about 20 spins per sixty seconds. Something that is crucial at this point is the amount of time the mould will spend within the oven. If it stays to long, the product will lose stability and strength, producing a poor product. If it is removed from the oven prematurely, the polymer will not have flowed correctly, which creates bubbles in the completed product line.

3. Mould cooling down.
When the component has completely spent the right amount of time in the oven, it is then taken out for cooling. This may be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which generates a cool mist. When the component cools, it shrinks slightly for ease of extraction from the mold. This is yet another measure that depends upon a lot on the right timing, since rapid cooling decreases the material too quick, causing bending of the material.

4. The discharging or de-molding phase.
As soon as the product inside te mould has cooled properly, the molder managing the process can then take out the finished product from the mould. The process is repeated from the beginning, providing a number of exact items.
