The Rotomolding Process Components

1. Mold fitting.
A fixed volume of polymer in particle form is loaded into a hollow mold. The mould is usually made of cast aluminium or sheet steel material. The coloring wanted for the end goods is pre compounded into the polymer. The most typically used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this type of plastic engineering.

Pre-heating of the oven follows, and it can be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is warmed to temperatures between 500-700F. The mould with the powdered polymer is then secured and positioned into the oven.

2. The heating and fusion phase.
Once within the oven, the mold is turned on two axis so the powdered polymer liquefies from the heat and coats the inside if the mould. The turning is done slowly and gradually, about 20 rotations per minute. The main thing that is crucial at this point is the period of time the mould will spend inside the oven. If it stays to long, the material will lose stability and strength, generating a poor item. If it is extracted from the oven too early, the polymer will not have flowed properly, which generates bubbles in the finalized product line.

3. Mould cooling.
When the material has completely spent the right amount of time in the oven, it is then taken out for cooling. This may be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which creates a cool mist. When the product cools, it shrinks a little for ease of removal from the mould. This is yet another measure that relies a lot on the ideal timing, since rapid cooling shrinks the material too fast, causing warping of the item.

4. The un-loading or de-molding step.
When the material within te mould has cooled correctly, the molder managing the procedure can then extract the finalized item from the mold. The procedure is repeated from the start, supplying a number of exact products.
