The Rotomoulding Method in Detail

1. Mould preparation.
A fixed volume of polymer in particle form is loaded into a hollow mold. The mold is usually made from cast aluminium or sheet steel component. The most generally used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this format of plastic engineering.

Preheating of the oven follows, and it may be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is heated up to temperatures between 500-700F. The mold with the powdered polymer is then sealed and installed into the oven.

2. The heating up and fusion step.
Once placed into the oven, the mold is turned on two axis so the powdered polymer melts from the heat and layers the inside if the mold. The turning is done slowly, about 20 spins per sixty seconds. Something that is important at this point is the period of time the mold will spend inside the oven. If it overstays, the component will lose value and durability, producing a poor item. If it is extracted from the oven too early, the polymer will not have melted correctly, which generates bubbles in the finalized product.

3. Mould cooling.
When the product has completely spent the enough of time in the oven, it is then extracted for cooling. This may be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which a cool mist. When the material cools, it shrinks a little for ease of extraction from the mold. This is another measure that relies a lot on the right timing, since rapid cooling shrinks the material too fast, causing warping of the product.

4. The offloading or de-moulding phase.
As soon as the product within te mould has cooled correctly, the molder taking care of the process can then take out the finished item from the mould. The procedure is repeated from the beginning, giving a series of identical items.
