The Rotomolding Process in Detail

This moulding procedure has been used since early times for creatingvseverl products. Egyptians for example, used rotational molding techniques in the creating of ceramics. The procedure has however taken long to take affect because it was thought of to be a somewhat slow-moving process

1. Mold readying.
A fixed volume of polymer in grain form is loaded into a hollow mold. The mold is usually made from cast aluminium or sheet steel material. The colour chosen for the finished item is pre compounded into the polymer. The most commonly used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this format of plastic engineering.

Preheating of the oven follows, and it may be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is heated to temperatures between 500-700F. The mould with the powdered polymer is then sealed and placed into the oven.

2. The heating up and fusion process.
Once placed into the oven, the mould is rotated on two axis so the powdered polymer melts from the heat and overlays the inside if the mould. The turning is done gradually, about 20 revolutions per sixty seconds. Something that is important at this moment is the period of time the mould will spend within the oven. If it overstays, the product will lose stability and durability, producing a poor product. If it is taken out from the oven prematurely, the polymer will not have liquefied correctly, which develops bubbles in the finalized item.

3. Mold cooling down.
When the component has sufficiently spent the right amount of time in the oven, it is then taken out for cooling. This may be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which creates a cool mist. When the material cools, it reduces somewhat for ease of removal from the mould. This is yet another measure that relies a lot on the ideal timing, since rapid cooling shrinks the material too quickly, causing bending of the product.

4. The discharging or de-molding step.
As soon as the material within te mould has cooled successfully, the person handling the procedure can then take out the finalized item from the mould. The technique is repeated from the beginning, making a series of similar product lines.
