The Roto-Molding Process in Detail

This molding system has been used since early times for creatingvseverl product lines. Egyptians for instance, worked with rotational molding methods in the making of ceramics. The Swiss were also utilizing this rotation type to create hollow chocolate eggs. Some plastic products in the USA were manufactured using this approach some time between 1940 and 1950. The process has however taken long to catch on because it was thought of as being a somewhat slow process

1. Mold readying.
A predetermined amount of polymer in particle form is loaded into a hollow mould. The mould is usually composeded of cast aluminium or sheet steel component. The coloration desired for the finished product is pre compounded into the polymer. The most typically used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this type of plastic manufacturing.

Pre-heating of the oven starts, and it can be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is heated to temperatures between 500-700F. The mould with the powdered polymer is then locked and inserted inside the oven.

2. The heating and fusion procedure.
Once within the oven, the mould is turned on two axis so the powdered polymer liquefies from the heat and overlays the inside if the mold. The spinning is done gradually, about 20 rotations per minute. Something that is crucial at this point is the amount of time the mold will spend within the oven. If it stays to long, the material will lose stability and durability, making a faulty item. If it is removed from the oven too early, the polymer will not have melted properly, which produces bubbles in the finalized product line.

3. Mould cooling down.
When the material has sufficiently spent the enough of time in the oven, it is then removed for cooling. This may be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which generates a cool mist. When the material cools, it shrinks a little for ease of extraction from the mold. This is yet another measure that depends upon a lot on the right timing, since quick cooling shrinks the material too fast, causing warping of the product.

4. The discharging or de-molding phase.
Once the material inside te mold has cooled adequately, the person handling the procedure can then take out the completed product from the mold. The process is repeated from the start, making a series of identical product lines.
