The Rotomoulding Method in Detail

This moulding procedure has been used since early times for creatingvseverl items. Egyptians for instance, worked with rotational molding techniques in the producing of ceramics. 1. Mold fitting.
A predetermined amount of polymer in particle form is packed into a hollow mould. The mold is usually made of cast aluminium or sheet steel material. The coloring needed for the final goods is pre compounded into the polymer. The most typically used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this style of plastic assembly.

Pre-heating of the oven follows, and it can be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is heated to temperatures between 500-700F. The mould with the powdered polymer is then sealed and inserted within the oven.

2. The heating up and fusion phase.
Once within the oven, the mold is rotated on two axis so the powdered polymer liquefies from the heat and layers the inside if the mold. The turning is done slowly, about 20 revolutions per sixty seconds. Something that is crucial at this moment is the period of time the mold will spend inside the oven. If it overstays, the product will lose stability and strength, producing a weak item. If it is extracted from the oven prematurely, the polymer will not have melted properly, which generates bubbles in the finalized item.

3. Mould cooling down.
When the product has completely spent the correct amount of time in the oven, it is then removed for cooling. This can be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which creates a cool mist. When the product cools, it reduces a little for ease of removal from the mold. This is another procedure that relies a lot on the correct timing, since quick cooling shrinks the material too quickly, causing bending of the material.

4. The offloading or de-moulding phase.
When the product inside te mold has cooled adequately, the person handling the procedure can then remove the finalized item from the mould. The procedure is repeated from the start, providing a number of similar products.
