The Rotomoulding Process Components

1. Mold readying.

Preheating of the oven starts, and it may be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is heated to temperatures between 500-700F. The mould with the powdered polymer is then sealed and inserted into the oven.

2. The heat and fusion step.
Once within the oven, the mold is spun on two axis so the powdered polymer liquefies from the heat and overlays the inside if the mould. The spinning is done slowly, about 20 rotations per min. The main thing that is important at this moment is the amount of time the mold will spend inside the oven. If it overstays, the material will lose value and strength, producing a poor item. If it is extracted from the oven too early, the polymer will not have melted correctly, which generates bubbles in the completed item.

3. Mold cooling.
When the component has completely spent the right amount of time in the oven, it is then taken out for cooling. This may be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which generates a cool mist. When the component cools, it shrinks a little for ease of removal from the mould. This is another measure that relies a lot on the correct timing, since quick cooling reduces the material too rapidly, causing bending of the material.

4. The offloading or de-molding phase.
As soon as the material within te mold has cooled successfully, the person managing the procedure can then remove the finished item from the mould. The procedure is repeated from the beginning, giving a number of similar items.
