The Rotomolding Procedure in Detail

1. Mold preparation.
A predetermined quantity of polymer in grain form is packed into a hollow mould. The mould is usually constructed from cast aluminium or sheet steel component. The coloring preferred for the end product is pre compounded into the polymer. The most often used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this format of plastic engineering.

Pre-heating of the oven follows, and it may be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is heated to temperatures between 500-700F. The mould with the powdered polymer is then secured and put into the oven.

2. The heating up and fusion step.
Once placed into the oven, the mould is revolved on two axis so the powdered polymer liquefies from the heat and overlays the inside if the mold. The rotation is done slowly, about 20 rotations per min. The main thing that is critical at this moment is the period of time the mould will spend inside the oven. If it stays to long, the material will lose stability and durability, generating a faulty item. If it is removed from the oven prematurely, the polymer will not have liquefied correctly, which creates bubbles in the completed product line.

3. Mould cooling.
When the product has completely spent the right amount of time in the oven, it is then taken out for cooling. This can be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which a cool mist. When the component cools, it shrinks somewhat for ease of extraction from the mold. This is an additional measure that depends upon a lot on the ideal timing, since quick cooling decreases the material too quick, causing bending of the product.

4. The removing or de-molding step.
As soon as the material inside te mold has cooled correctly, the molder taking care of the operation can then take out the finalized item from the mold. The function is repeated from the start, giving a number of identical product lines.
