The Rotomolding Method Components

1. Mold prep work.
A predetermined quantity of polymer in powder form is loaded into a hollow mould. The mold is usually built from cast aluminium or sheet steel material. The most commonly used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this format of plastic engineering.

Pre-heating of the oven follows, and it can be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is heated to temperatures between 500-700F. The mould with the powdered polymer is then sealed and put inside the oven.

2. The heating and fusion phase.
Once inside the oven, the mold is rotated on two axis so the powdered polymer melts from the heat and layers the inside if the mold. The turning is done slowly and gradually, about 20 rotations per min. The main thing that is vital at this moment is the amount of time the mold will spend inside the oven. If it stays to long, the product will lose value and durability, creating a weak product. If it is taken out from the oven too early, the polymer will not have flowed properly, which creates bubbles in the finished product line.

3. Mould cooling down.
When the product has sufficiently spent the enough of time in the oven, it is then removed for cooling. This can be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which creates a cool mist. When the product cools, it shrinks somewhat for ease of extraction from the mold. This is one more step that depends a lot on the ideal timing, since rapid cooling shrinks the material too quickly, causing warping of the item.

4. The removing or de-moulding phase.
Once the material within te mold has cooled properly, the person handling the procedure can then remove the finalized item from the mould. The procedure is repeated from the start, giving a series of exact product lines.
