The Rotomolding Method Components

1. Mold prep work.
A predetermined quantity of polymer in powder form is packed into a hollow mold. The mould is usually made from cast aluminium or sheet steel material. Pre-heating of the oven follows, and it may be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is heated to temperatures between 500-700F. The mould with the powdered polymer is then secured and inserted into the oven.

2. The heat and fusion process.
Once within the oven, the mold is rotated on two axis so the powdered polymer liquefies from the heat and coats the inside if the mould. The turning is done slowly, about 20 revolutions per sixty seconds. One thing that is critical at this moment is the period of time the mold will spend inside the oven. If it overstays, the component will lose stability and durability, producing a weak item. If it is taken out from the oven prematurely, the polymer will not have flowed properly, which develops bubbles in the finished product.

3. Mold cooling.
When the component has sufficiently spent the right amount of time in the oven, it is then extracted for cooling. This can be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which generates a cool mist. When the component cools, it shrinks slightly for ease of extraction from the mold. This is another procedure that relies a lot on the correct timing, since quick cooling decreases the material too rapidly, causing bending of the item.

4. The discharging or de-moulding step.
As soon as the component inside te mold has cooled successfully, the person managing the operation can then remove the finished item from the mold. The technique is repeated from the beginning, supplying a number of identical items.
