The Rotomolding Process in Detail

1. Mould fitting.
A predetermined measure of polymer in grain form is packed into a hollow mold. The mold is usually constructed from cast aluminium or sheet steel material. Pre-heating of the oven starts, and it may be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is heated up to temperatures between 500-700F. The mold with the powdered polymer is then secured and positioned inside the oven.

2. The heat and fusion process.
Once inside the oven, the mould is revolved on two axis so the powdered polymer liquefies from the heat and overlays the inside if the mold. The turning is done gradually, about 20 spins per min. The main thing that is crucial at this point is the amount of time the mold will spend within the oven. If it overstays, the material will lose stability and strength, generating a faulty product. If it is removed from the oven too early, the polymer will not have flowed properly, which produces bubbles in the finished product.

3. Mold cooling.
When the material has sufficiently spent the correct amount of time in the oven, it is then extracted for cooling. This may be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which creates a cool mist. When the material cools, it shrinks slightly for ease of removal from the mold. This is an additional procedure that depends upon a lot on the right timing, since quick cooling reduces the material too quickly, causing bending of the item.

4. The removing or de-moulding step.
As soon as the component within te mold has cooled properly, the molder managing the process can then take out the finished item from the mold. The function is repeated from the start, making a series of exact products.
