The Roto-Molding Method in Detail

1. Mold prep work.
A predetermined amount of polymer in powder form is loaded into a hollow mold. The mould is usually built from cast aluminium or sheet steel component. The coloring desired for the end item is pre compounded into the polymer. The most often used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this format of plastic manufacturing.

Preheating of the oven follows, and it can be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is heated up to temperatures between 500-700F. The mould with the powdered polymer is then locked and placed into the oven.

2. The heat and fusion step.
Once placed into the oven, the mold is revolved on two axis so the powdered polymer liquefies from the heat and coats the inside if the mold. The turning is done gradually, about 20 revolutions per min. The main thing that is important at this moment is the period of time the mould will spend within the oven. If it stays to long, the component will lose value and strength, producing a faulty product. If it is removed from the oven prematurely, the polymer will not have liquefied properly, which generates bubbles in the finished item.

3. Mold cooling down.
When the product has sufficiently spent the right amount of time in the oven, it is then extracted for cooling. This can be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which creates a cool mist. When the product cools, it reduces a little for ease of removal from the mould. This is one more step that depends a lot on the ideal timing, since rapid cooling reduces the material too fast, causing warping of the material.

4. The discharging or de-moulding step.
When the component inside te mould has cooled adequately, the molder managing the operation can then extract the completed item from the mould. The technique is repeated from the beginning, giving a series of similar product lines.
