The Rotomoulding Method in Detail

1. Mould fitting.
A fixed quantity of polymer in particle form is filled into a hollow mold. The mould is usually built from cast aluminium or sheet steel component. The color tone intended for the final goods is pre compounded into the polymer. The most generally used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this design of plastic assembly.

Pre-heating of the oven starts, and it can be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is heated up to temperatures between 500-700F. The mold with the powdered polymer is then secured and installed inside the oven.

2. The heat and fusion phase.
Once placed into the oven, the mold is spun on two axis so the powdered polymer melts from the heat and layers the inside if the mold. The spinning is done slowly and gradually, about 20 spins per minute. Something that is important at this point is the amount of time the mould will spend inside the oven. If it stays to long, the product will lose value and durability, generating a weak product. If it is removed from the oven too early, the polymer will not have flowed properly, which produces bubbles in the finished item.

3. Mould cooling down.
When the component has sufficiently spent the correct amount of time in the oven, it is then extracted for cooling. This can be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which creates a cool mist. When the product cools, it shrinks somewhat for ease of removal from the mold. This is an additional procedure that depends a lot on the right timing, since rapid cooling reduces the material too rapidly, causing warping of the material.

4. The discharging or de-molding phase.
As soon as the component inside te mould has cooled effectively, the molder managing the operation can then take out the finished item from the mold. The function is repeated from the start, giving a series of identical product lines.
