The Rotomolding Procedure in Detail

1. Mold prep work.
A predetermined amount of polymer in powder form is filled into a hollow mould. The mould is usually made of cast aluminium or sheet steel material. The coloration wanted for the finished product is pre compounded into the polymer. The most generally used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this format of plastic engineering.

Pre-heating of the oven follows, and it may be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is heated up to temperatures between 500-700F. The mould with the powdered polymer is then secured and installed within the oven.

2. The heating up and fusion process.
Once within the oven, the mould is spun on two axis so the powdered polymer melts from the heat and coats the inside if the mould. The rotation is done slowly, about 20 revolutions per min. One thing that is important at this moment is the amount of time the mould will spend inside the oven. If it overstays, the material will lose value and durability, making a faulty product. If it is extracted from the oven prematurely, the polymer will not have liquefied properly, which creates bubbles in the completed item.

3. Mould cooling.
When the component has sufficiently spent the right amount of time in the oven, it is then extracted for cooling. This may be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which generates a cool mist. When the material cools, it shrinks somewhat for ease of extraction from the mold. This is one more step that depends upon a lot on the correct timing, since rapid cooling shrinks the material too fast, causing warping of the item.

4. The offloading or de-molding step.
As soon as the material inside te mould has cooled adequately, the molder taking care of the procedure can then remove the finalized item from the mold. The procedure is repeated from the start, giving a series of similar items.
