The Rotomoulding Process Components

1. Mould fitting.
A predetermined amount of polymer in grain form is packed into a hollow mold. The mould is usually comprised of cast aluminium or sheet steel material. The most generally used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this design of plastic production.

Preheating of the oven follows, and it can be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is heated to temperatures between 500-700F. The mold with the powdered polymer is then locked and installed within the oven.

2. The heating up and fusion phase.
Once within the oven, the mold is revolved on two axis so the powdered polymer melts from the heat and layers the inside if the mold. The turning is done slowly, about 20 revolutions per sixty seconds. The main thing that is crucial at this moment is the amount of time the mould will spend within the oven. If it stays to long, the material will lose stability and strength, generating a faulty item. If it is extracted from the oven too early, the polymer will not have liquefied correctly, which generates bubbles in the completed product line.

3. Mold cooling down.
When the material has completely spent the right amount of time in the oven, it is then taken out for cooling. This may be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which creates a cool mist. When the product cools, it shrinks slightly for ease of extraction from the mold. This is one more measure that depends a lot on the correct timing, since quick cooling reduces the material too quick, causing warping of the item.

4. The discharging or de-molding step.
Once the product within te mould has cooled effectively, the molder managing the process can then take out the completed product from the mold. The function is repeated from the start, making a series of similar products.
