The Rotomoulding Process in Detail

This molding system has been used since early times for creatingvseverl product lines. Egyptians for example, worked with rotomoulding procedures in the creating of ceramics. 1. Mold prep work.
A predetermined volume of polymer in powder form is packed into a hollow mould. The mould is usually comprised of cast aluminium or sheet steel component. The coloring wanted for the finished product is pre compounded into the polymer. The most commonly used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this type of plastic manufacturing.

Preheating of the oven follows, and it may be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is heated to temperatures between 500-700F. The mold with the powdered polymer is then sealed and positioned into the oven.

2. The heat and fusion process.
Once within the oven, the mould is spun on two axis so the powdered polymer liquefies from the heat and coats the inside if the mold. The turning is done slowly, about 20 rotations per minute. One thing that is important at this moment is the period of time the mould will spend within the oven. If it overstays, the product will lose value and durability, generating a faulty product. If it is extracted from the oven too early, the polymer will not have flowed correctly, which generates bubbles in the finalized product line.

3. Mold cooling.
When the component has sufficiently spent the correct amount of time in the oven, it is then removed for cooling. This can be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which generates a cool mist. When the component cools, it shrinks slightly for ease of removal from the mold. This is one more measure that depends a lot on the right timing, since rapid cooling reduces the material too fast, causing bending of the material.

4. The unloading or de-molding phase.
As soon as the product inside te mold has cooled adequately, the molder taking care of the procedure can then take out the finished product from the mould. The procedure is repeated from the start, giving a series of similar product lines.
