The Rotomolding Method in Detail

1. Mould fitting.
A fixed measure of polymer in particle form is filled into a hollow mould. The mold is usually built from cast aluminium or sheet steel component. Pre-heating of the oven follows, and it may be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is heated up to temperatures between 500-700F. The mold with the powdered polymer is then locked and positioned inside the oven.

2. The heating up and fusion phase.
Once placed into the oven, the mold is rotated on two axis so the powdered polymer melts from the heat and coats the inside if the mold. The turning is done slowly and gradually, about 20 rotations per minute. The main thing that is essential at this point is the period of time the mold will spend inside the oven. If it overstays, the material will lose stability and strength, making a poor product. If it is extracted from the oven too early, the polymer will not have melted correctly, which creates bubbles in the finalized product line.

3. Mould cooling down.
When the component has completely spent the enough of time in the oven, it is then removed for cooling. This can be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which a cool mist. When the component cools, it reduces somewhat for ease of extraction from the mould. This is one more measure that depends upon a lot on the ideal timing, since rapid cooling reduces the material too quick, causing bending of the material.

4. The unloading or de-molding phase.
As soon as the product inside te mold has cooled effectively, the molder handling the operation can then take out the finalized product from the mold. The technique is repeated from the start, providing a series of exact items.
