The Rotomoulding Method in Detail

1. Mould fitting.
A fixed measure of polymer in particle form is loaded into a hollow mold. The mold is usually made from cast aluminium or sheet steel component. Pre-heating of the oven starts, and it can be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is heated to temperatures between 500-700F. The mould with the powdered polymer is then locked and placed within the oven.

2. The heating up and fusion procedure.
Once inside the oven, the mould is turned on two axis so the powdered polymer liquefies from the heat and coats the inside if the mould. The turning is done slowly and gradually, about 20 revolutions per sixty seconds. One thing that is crucial at this point is the period of time the mould will spend within the oven. If it overstays, the component will lose value and durability, generating a weak product. If it is extracted from the oven prematurely, the polymer will not have flowed properly, which develops bubbles in the finalized product line.

3. Mould cooling.
When the product has completely spent the right amount of time in the oven, it is then taken out for cooling. This may be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which generates a cool mist. When the component cools, it shrinks slightly for ease of extraction from the mould. This is yet another procedure that relies a lot on the ideal timing, since rapid cooling reduces the material too quickly, causing bending of the material.

4. The discharging or de-moulding step.
Once the product inside te mold has cooled properly, the molder managing the process can then remove the finished product from the mold. The function is repeated from the beginning, making a series of similar items.
