The Rotomolding Method in Detail

1. Mould fitting.
A predetermined volume of polymer in particle form is loaded into a hollow mould. The mould is usually made from cast aluminium or sheet steel component. The coloring intended for the final item is pre compounded into the polymer. The most typically used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this format of plastic production.

Pre-heating of the oven starts, and it can be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is warmed to temperatures between 500-700F. The mold with the powdered polymer is then locked and installed within the oven.

2. The heating and fusion phase.
Once within the oven, the mould is revolved on two axis so the powdered polymer liquefies from the heat and coats the inside if the mold. The rotation is done gradually, about 20 spins per min. One thing that is essential at this moment is the amount of time the mold will spend inside the oven. If it overstays, the material will lose stability and durability, generating a poor item. If it is extracted from the oven too early, the polymer will not have melted correctly, which produces bubbles in the finalized product line.

3. Mold cooling.
When the material has sufficiently spent the right amount of time in the oven, it is then extracted for cooling. This can be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which a cool mist. When the component cools, it shrinks somewhat for ease of removal from the mold. This is another procedure that relies a lot on the ideal timing, since quick cooling shrinks the material too quickly, causing warping of the material.

4. The un-loading or de-moulding step.
As soon as the component inside te mold has cooled correctly, the person managing the operation can then take out the finalized item from the mold. The function is repeated from the beginning, giving a number of exact products.
