The Roto-Molding Method in Detail

1. Mould prep work.
A predetermined quantity of polymer in particle form is filled into a hollow mould. The mold is usually crafted from cast aluminium or sheet steel component. The color tone preferred for the finished goods is pre compounded into the polymer. The most generally used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this format of plastic production.

Pre-heating of the oven follows, and it can be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is warmed to temperatures between 500-700F. The mould with the powdered polymer is then locked and positioned inside the oven.

2. The heat and fusion step.
Once within the oven, the mould is turned on two axis so the powdered polymer melts from the heat and overlays the inside if the mould. The turning is done slowly and gradually, about 20 revolutions per min. One thing that is essential at this moment is the period of time the mould will spend inside the oven. If it overstays, the product will lose value and strength, generating a poor item. If it is removed from the oven too early, the polymer will not have flowed correctly, which creates bubbles in the finished product.

3. Mould cooling down.
When the component has sufficiently spent the enough of time in the oven, it is then removed for cooling. This can be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which creates a cool mist. When the product cools, it shrinks slightly for ease of removal from the mold. This is yet another procedure that depends upon a lot on the correct timing, since rapid cooling reduces the material too fast, causing warping of the item.

4. The un-loading or de-moulding step.
Once the material within te mold has cooled successfully, the molder managing the procedure can then extract the finalized item from the mold. The technique is repeated from the beginning, giving a series of exact products.
