The Rotomolding Method in Detail

This moulding technique has been used since early times for creatingvseverl items. Egyptians as an example, employed rotomoulding procedures in the making of ceramics. 1. Mould readying.
A fixed quantity of polymer in powder form is packed into a hollow mold. The mould is usually composeded of cast aluminium or sheet steel material. The coloring preferred for the finished goods is pre compounded into the polymer. The most often used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this design of plastic engineering.

Pre-heating of the oven starts, and it can be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is heated up to temperatures between 500-700F. The mold with the powdered polymer is then locked and inserted into the oven.

2. The heat and fusion process.
Once placed into the oven, the mold is turned on two axis so the powdered polymer liquefies from the heat and coats the inside if the mould. The spinning is done slowly and gradually, about 20 rotations per minute. One thing that is critical at this moment is the period of time the mould will spend inside the oven. If it overstays, the product will lose value and durability, generating a poor product. If it is taken out from the oven prematurely, the polymer will not have melted properly, which generates bubbles in the finished item.

3. Mould cooling.
When the product has sufficiently spent the enough of time in the oven, it is then taken out for cooling. This may be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which creates a cool mist. When the component cools, it shrinks a little for ease of extraction from the mould. This is another measure that depends a lot on the ideal timing, since quick cooling shrinks the material too rapidly, causing warping of the material.

4. The un-loading or de-moulding step.
When the material inside te mould has cooled correctly, the molder taking care of the process can then remove the finished product from the mold. The process is repeated from the beginning, giving a number of identical product lines.
