The Rotomolding Process Components

1. Mould prep work.
A predetermined volume of polymer in grain form is loaded into a hollow mold. The mold is usually crafted from cast aluminium or sheet steel material. The most often used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this type of plastic production.

Preheating of the oven follows, and it may be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is heated to temperatures between 500-700F. The mold with the powdered polymer is then sealed and placed within the oven.

2. The heating and fusion step.
Once within the oven, the mold is spun on two axis so the powdered polymer liquefies from the heat and coats the inside if the mould. The rotation is done gradually, about 20 spins per sixty seconds. The main thing that is important at this moment is the period of time the mold will spend within the oven. If it stays to long, the material will lose stability and durability, creating a weak product. If it is removed from the oven prematurely, the polymer will not have flowed correctly, which generates bubbles in the finished product line.

3. Mold cooling down.
When the product has sufficiently spent the right amount of time in the oven, it is then taken out for cooling. This can be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which generates a cool mist. When the material cools, it reduces slightly for ease of removal from the mold. This is one more measure that depends upon a lot on the correct timing, since quick cooling reduces the material too fast, causing warping of the material.

4. The unloading or de-moulding phase.
When the component inside te mold has cooled adequately, the person taking care of the operation can then remove the finished item from the mold. The procedure is repeated from the beginning, supplying a number of identical product lines.
