The Roto-Molding Method in Detail

1. Mould readying.
A predetermined amount of polymer in powder form is loaded into a hollow mold. The mold is usually constructed from cast aluminium or sheet steel material. The most commonly used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this design of plastic engineering.

Preheating of the oven follows, and it may be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is warmed to temperatures between 500-700F. The mould with the powdered polymer is then secured and positioned into the oven.

2. The heating up and fusion process.
Once inside the oven, the mould is turned on two axis so the powdered polymer melts from the heat and layers the inside if the mould. The spinning is done slowly, about 20 rotations per min. The main thing that is critical at this point is the amount of time the mould will spend inside the oven. If it stays to long, the material will lose stability and durability, creating a weak item. If it is removed from the oven prematurely, the polymer will not have liquefied properly, which creates bubbles in the completed product.

3. Mold cooling down.
When the material has completely spent the correct amount of time in the oven, it is then extracted for cooling. This can be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which creates a cool mist. When the product cools, it shrinks somewhat for ease of removal from the mold. This is yet another step that depends upon a lot on the ideal timing, since quick cooling decreases the material too quickly, causing warping of the item.

4. The removing or de-molding step.
As soon as the component within te mould has cooled correctly, the person taking care of the process can then remove the finished product from the mould. The technique is repeated from the beginning, making a number of identical products.
